Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a Garden Designer?
Designing and building a garden is a challenging process and requires a diverse range of creative, technical and horticultural knowledge to deliver successful results. Employing the services of a professional garden designer can save you both time and money by designing a garden that suits your budget, expectations and space.
What is the best time of year to have my garden designed?
Gardens can be designed at any time of the year. However, if you want your garden to be ready to enjoy during the summer months, its best to start the design process in the autumn. The garden can then be built during the winter, planted in the spring, and enjoyed in the summer. Don’t worry if you’ve missed the autumn slot, as I can help you at any time!
What does a garden design package include?
Every garden project is different, and will therefore require a tailored approach. After an initial design consultation meeting, I can put together a design package that is specific to you and your garden. For further details in what is involved in the design process, please visit Design Packages.
I’m thinking of having an extension built and want to have my garden redesigned. When should I contact you?
The earlier I can get on board the better. I can work with your architect and/or builder to create a seamless transition between your house and garden. This also helps to save time and money in the long term.
How long will it take to have my garden designed and built?
This very much depends on the scale and complexity of your garden and the design required. In addition to the design process, high quality landscapers and contractors are likely to be booking in jobs several months ahead. As a rule of thumb, six months is a practical time frame for most projects, from survey to completion of the build.
Why do I need to have garden construction details?
Construction details are an integral and essential part of the design package. They specify exactly how the garden will be built and with what materials. Without the construction details, the design is open to interpretation by the landscaper / contractor, and may not end up being built quite as we intended, leading to disappointment and costly alterations.
How much will it cost to design my garden?
Each project is unique and is quoted as such. A variety of factors are considered, such as the size of the garden, level changes and complexity of the design required, For an indication of starting prices for Sanctuary Garden Design packages, please refer to Design Packages.
How much will it cost to build my garden?
As with design costs, each garden project is unique and the cost depends on a number of factors, including the size of the garden, the final design, choice of materials and site clearance. Examples of garden build costs can be found in my Portfolio. Guidance on a starting cost for you garden build can be given following the initial design consultation, if required. It is advisable to think about what you are prepared to spend on your garden as early as possible. This will help me to give you the best possible design for your budget. It is also advisable to include a contingency of 10% to the garden build cost, for any unforeseen issues.
Do you have your own landscape team?
Sanctuary Garden Design does not have an in-house landscaping team, but we regularly work with a select team of highly experienced landscapers, contractors and trades people, who build our designs to a high specification.
Do you act as Project Manager for the garden build?
I do not project manage, but I can help with finding a suitable landscaper or contractor. I can offer a Project Inspection Service, which comprises inspections of the garden build carried out at suitable intervals, as agreed with you. The purpose of this is to ensure that the design plans are adhered to and address any unforeseen issues on site.
How do I appoint you?
To get the process started, I offer an initial garden design consultation visit of approximately one hour (free within 15 miles of West Bridgford). During this visit, we will spend some time discussing your initial ideas and gaining an understanding of the space. I will then prepare a client brief based on our discussions, along with a fee proposal for the design phases.
